Overhead drywall isn't as scary as it looks
My upstairs tub overflowed, water dripped through the kitchen ceiling, and I had to cut out two roughly three-inch holes to dry the cavity. I assumed I'd need a contractor because ceiling work is overhead and harder than walls.
The trick is a self-adhesive metal mesh patch. Stick it over the hole, spread joint compound over it, sand smooth. I pressed the patch in, spread compound, did three coats, and now you can't see them.
When this patch makes sense
I would use it again for a small, stable hole where the surrounding drywall is dry and solid. It saves the work of cutting a larger square and adding wood backing, and the mesh gives compound something to bridge across.
I would not use it to hide an active leak, soft drywall, mold, a sagging ceiling, or a damaged area larger than the patch is designed to cover. Those problems need the source fixed and may require damaged material to be removed before cosmetic repair begins.
How I got the patch to disappear
The first coat only locks the mesh in place. The finish came from widening each later coat beyond the edge of the previous one, letting it dry, and sanding the transition instead of building a thick bump directly over the hole. Matching the existing ceiling texture and paint is a separate step.
