Why bigger isn't better here
For low water usage, get a smaller-capacity softener, something like 24,000 to 32,000 grains instead of the typical 48,000+ systems. The Aquasure Harmony 32k runs At its current price-500 and, because it regenerates more often with your usage, it keeps the resin from sitting stagnant, which is what prevents bacteria buildup in an oversized unit.
You can also set it to regenerate on a time-based schedule, say every five to seven days, instead of purely on usage. That keeps the resin fresh even when you're not using much water.
