Stitches per inch equals the fabric count for Aida worked one over one, or half the count for evenweave and linen worked two over two. A 3 inch margin on each side leaves room to mount the work in a hoop or frame; add more for larger frames.
How to size cross stitch fabric
The finished size of a design depends on two things: how many stitches it is and how many stitches fit in an inch of your fabric. On Aida worked one over one, the fabric count is the stitches per inch, so 14 count gives 14 stitches to the inch. On evenweave and linen worked two over two, you cover two threads per stitch, so the stitches per inch is half the count, and 28 count linen also gives 14 stitches per inch.
Divide the stitch count by the stitches per inch for each dimension and you have the finished design size. Then add a margin on every side, usually about three inches, so there is fabric to grip in a hoop and mount in a frame.
Do not skimp on the margin
Running out of fabric at the edge is one of the most common and frustrating mistakes. Three inches per side is the usual minimum; go larger for a big frame, for scroll frames, or if you are new and want insurance. It is far cheaper to trim off extra fabric than to restart a finished piece that will not mount.
