A full cord is 128 cubic feet, a stack 4 ft high by 8 ft long by 4 ft deep. A "face cord" or "rick" is only as deep as the logs are long (often 16 in), so it is about a third of a full cord. Buy by the full cord to compare prices fairly.
How much firewood is in a cord?
A full cord is a precise amount: 128 cubic feet of stacked wood, traditionally a pile 4 feet high, 8 feet long, and 4 feet deep. To measure any stack, multiply its length by its height in feet, then by the log length converted to feet, and divide by 128 to get cords. This calculator does that for you from three simple measurements.
The catch is stacking. The 128 cubic feet includes the air gaps in a neatly stacked pile; a loose or jumbled heap of the same wood measures larger but contains less actual wood, which is why reputable sellers quote stacked cords.
Cords, face cords, and ricks
The terms that cause confusion are "face cord" and "rick." These are stacks 4 feet high and 8 feet long, but only as deep as the logs are long. With common 16-inch logs that is about a third of a full cord, so a face cord holds roughly a third of the wood. Always confirm whether a price is per full cord or per face cord before you buy, and measure your delivery to be sure you got what you paid for.
