Osprey Farpoint & Samsonite Winfield

8.9/10 Our verdictHands-on tested · not gifted

You don't need the premium brands. Midrange like the Samsonite Winfield outlasts Amazon basics where it actually counts — wheels and zippers. And my Osprey Farpoint backpack goes everywhere with me.

Why midrange is the sweet spot

For a long trip, get something decent — but you don't need the expensive designer brands. I've used both cheap and expensive luggage, and midrange stuff like the Samsonite Winfield holds up way better than Amazon basics. The wheels and zippers are what fail first on cheap luggage, and that's exactly what ruins a trip.

The backpack I actually reach for

For a backpack, I have an Osprey Farpoint and I love it. I use it all the time — not just for travel, but for regular work stuff too. That everyday utility is what makes it worth the money over a throwaway bag.

What I liked

  • Wheels and zippers actually last
  • Big step up from cheap luggage
  • Osprey Farpoint works for daily use too
  • Midrange price, not designer markup

What to know

  • Not the flashiest looking
  • Midrange, not ultralight
  • Hard-side vs soft-side is personal
  • Premium brands add features you may not need

Common questions

Is expensive luggage worth it?

Midrange is the sweet spot. Cheap bags fail at the wheels and zippers; you don't need designer prices to avoid that.

Which backpack do you recommend?

The Osprey Farpoint — I use it for travel and everyday work alike.
