Why the body shop won't tell you this
Stop paying for a windshield replacement when the crack is under six inches. Body shops don't mention it because it's not their margin, but a budget DIY resin kit fixes most chips and cracks if you do it within a few days of the damage.
The resin goes in a bridge tool, a UV strip cures it in about 15 minutes of sun, and a razor scrapes the excess. Done. Wait too long, though, and the crack spreads past the fixable point, then you actually do need a replacement.
