8.7/10 Our verdictHands-on tested, not gifted

The self-adhesive mesh patch that fixes a ceiling hole without calling a contractor. Stick it over the hole, spread compound, sand, you genuinely can't see it after.

Overhead drywall isn't as scary as it looks

My upstairs tub overflowed, water dripped through the kitchen ceiling, and I had to cut out two roughly three-inch holes to dry the cavity. I assumed I'd need a contractor because ceiling work is overhead and harder than walls.

The trick is a self-adhesive metal mesh patch. Stick it over the hole, spread joint compound over it, sand smooth. I pressed the patch in, spread compound, did three coats, and now you can't see them.

What I liked

  • No contractor bill
  • Self-adhesive, holds overhead
  • Blends flat with a few coats
  • Cheap per patch

What to know

  • Best for small holes, not big sections
  • Three coats + sanding to blend
  • Dust from sanding
  • Paint-matching still on you

Common questions

Does the self-adhesive patch really hold on a ceiling?

Yes, the mesh sticks and the joint compound locks it in overhead just like on a wall.

How many coats of compound?

About three, sanding smooth between coats, then paint.
