Bissell Little Green Portable Cleaner

9.1/10 Our verdictHands-on tested, not gifted

About a year of ownership and zero problems so far. The thing I actually reach for it for is upholstery, and it brought a tired-looking couch back to looking like new. You spray the solution in, work it with the brush, and it sucks the dirty water back out.

What it did to my couch

The job I bought it for was the couch, and that is where it earned its keep. It came out looking like new. The way it works is straightforward: you fill the clean tank with water and the cleaning solution, spray it into the upholstery with the trigger, scrub the spot with the built-in brush, then pull the trigger again to vacuum the dirty water back out into a separate tank. The water that comes back out is genuinely grim, which is the oddly satisfying part, and the fabric looks and smells fresh once it dries.

A year of living with it

I have had it for about a year now with no problems at all. It still works exactly like it did on day one, and there is nothing fussy about it. The one thing to be clear about is what it is: a portable spot and upholstery cleaner, not a full-size carpet machine. It shines on couches, car seats, stairs, area rugs, and cleaning up spills, and it is not meant to do wall-to-wall carpet in one go. The tank is small, so on a big job you will stop to empty the dirty water and refill the clean side a few times.

Buy it if: you want to clean upholstery, car interiors, stairs, and spot-treat stains yourself instead of renting a machine or calling a cleaner. Note: the tank is small so expect refills on large jobs, and rinse the tank and hose out after each use so they do not get musty.

What I liked

  • Brought a tired couch back to looking like new
  • About a year in with zero problems for me
  • Simple spray-scrub-suction routine, easy to use
  • Great on couches, car seats, stairs, and spot stains
  • Cheaper over time than renting or hiring out upholstery cleaning

What to know

  • Small tank, so you refill and empty often on bigger jobs
  • Corded, not cordless
  • It is a spot and upholstery cleaner, not a full-size carpet machine
  • Rinse the hose and tanks after use or they can start to smell
  • Upholstery needs a few hours to dry after cleaning

Common questions

Does the Bissell Little Green actually clean a couch?

In my experience, yes. I used mine on my couch and it came out looking like new. You spray the cleaning solution in, scrub with the brush, and it vacuums the dirty water back out, and the fabric looks and smells fresh once it dries.

Is it a full carpet cleaner?

No, and that is the main thing to understand before buying. It is a portable spot and upholstery cleaner, ideal for couches, car seats, stairs, rugs, and spills. For cleaning wall-to-wall carpet throughout a house you want a full-size upright carpet cleaner instead.

Which Little Green should I get?

The classic Little Green is the one most people mean and the one I would point most buyers to. There is also a Little Green Max Pet with a larger, heated tank aimed at pet households, and a smaller Little Green Mini if you mostly want something compact for quick spills and the car.

Any problems after a year?

None for me. It has worked the same since day one. The only upkeep is rinsing the tank and hose after each use so nothing gets musty.
