BTECH GMRS-V1 Radio

8.6/10 Our verdictHands-on tested, not gifted

The rugged GMRS radio for the backcountry, waterproof, earpiece jack, better range than a Rocky Talkie and way cheaper at around $60-70. The tougher pick for hunting.

Why BTECH over a Rocky Talkie

The BTECH GMRS-V1 is solid for the backcountry, waterproof, has an earpiece jack, and it's way cheaper than a Rocky Talkie at around $60-70, with better range and more features. For hunting it's the better pick: more rugged, and the battery lasts longer in cold weather.

The Baofeng UV-5X is another option for like $30 and it also has an earpiece jack, but it's just not as durable. If you want something that'll take a beating in the field, the BTECH is the tougher choice. (BTECH now ships this as the updated GMRS-V2, same rugged radio.)

What I liked

  • Waterproof, built for the field
  • Earpiece jack for quiet comms
  • Better range and features than a Rocky Talkie
  • Battery holds up in cold weather

What to know

  • GMRS requires an FCC license (no exam)
  • Bulkier than a mini radio
  • Handheld range still limited by terrain
  • Programming has a learning curve
