Massage Gun for Sore Muscles

8.8/10 Our verdictHands-on tested, not gifted

The massage gun that beat my foam roller for post-workout soreness. The percussion actually breaks up the knots and lets you target specific spots.

Foam roller vs massage gun

I get brutal DOMS after leg days and tried a bunch of stuff. First I got a foam roller, it helped, but it's kind of a pain to use and doesn't hit deep tissue well.

Then I switched to a percussion massage gun and it's been way better for sore muscles. The percussion actually breaks up the knots, and I can target specific spots instead of rolling my whole body over a tube on the floor.

What I liked

  • Percussion reaches deep knots
  • More targeted than a foam roller
  • Portable, use it anywhere
  • Adjustable speeds/heads

What to know

  • Noisier than a foam roller
  • Battery needs charging
  • Cheap ones rattle, buy decent
  • Not a replacement for stretching

Common questions

Foam roller or massage gun?

A roller is cheap and fine, but a massage gun hits deep knots and specific spots far better.

Does it actually help DOMS?

It did for me, targeted percussion on the sore muscles after a hard session.
