How we research our buying guides

The standards behind every pick on this site

Most "best of" lists are spec sheets copied off a box, five near-identical picks, and no honest word about what is actually worth buying. This page explains how we do it differently, where our picks come from, and exactly what you can and cannot expect from each page. We would rather tell you the method than ask you to take the ranking on faith.

Two kinds of pages, clearly labeled

There are two kinds of content here, and we never blur them:

• Hands-on reviews. Products bought with our own money and lived with for weeks or months. These carry a "hands-on tested" note and an editorial verdict from real use.
• Research-backed buying guides. The large majority of the site. These are picks we have not personally tested. Every one says so plainly at the top, in a box that reads "research pick, not my own testing." We will never dress a research guide up as first-hand experience.

How a research pick is made

Each guide answers one specific buying question (for example, "the best canister filter for a 20 gallon tank," not "the best filter"). For that exact question we:

• Gather the real consensus. We read what owners actually say in the places enthusiasts gather: specialty forums, Reddit and hobby communities, and thousands of verified buyer reviews. Not manufacturer copy.
• Weigh it, not just count it. We look for the product experienced people recommend repeatedly, the failure modes they warn about, and the trade-offs that only show up after months of use.
• Pick a top choice plus real alternatives. One recommendation rarely fits everyone, so each guide names a top pick and two alternatives for different budgets, sizes, or use cases.
• Judge against clear criteria. Every guide lists the specific things that actually matter for that product, and the picks are chosen against those criteria, not against a brand's marketing.
• Confirm it is genuinely buyable. We verify each pick is a real product you can actually buy, at a sensible price for the job, before it goes on the page.

What we will not do

• No invented ratings. You will never see a fabricated star average or a made-up review count. Any score is our own clearly labeled editorial verdict, never pulled from a store.
• No fake first-hand claims. If we did not test something, we do not say we did. That honesty is the whole point.
• No hidden money. Some links are affiliate links, disclosed on every page and in full on our Affiliate Disclosure. A commission never changes a pick.

How we keep picks current

Products get discontinued, prices move, and better options arrive. Each guide shows a "last updated" date, and we revisit picks and pricing over time rather than letting a page sit stale. If you spot something out of date, the contact page reaches us directly.

How we choose what to cover

We deliberately write guides for specific, real questions that are underserved by the big publishers, the kind of thing you would ask in a hobby forum. That is why the topics run deep into aquariums, archery, homebrewing, RC, and dozens of other niches, rather than repeating the same mainstream roundups everyone else already has.
