The Best USB Microscope for Coin Collecting

8.4/10 Our verdictHands-on tested, not gifted

The cheap upgrade from a magnifying glass. A USB digital microscope puts the coin on your screen so you can actually see the detail, and grab clear photos of mint marks and errors. Get at least 50x.

Why a screen beats a loupe

Get a USB digital microscope, it's way more useful than those handheld ones because you can see the coin on your computer screen and take clear photos. That's huge for documenting errors or sharing for a grade.

Look for at least 50x magnification; anything less won't show you enough detail. They run around $30-40 and work way better than a regular magnifying glass for spotting mint marks, die cracks, and wear.

What I liked

  • See the coin on a screen, not through a loupe
  • Captures clear photos and video
  • 50x+ shows real detail
  • Cheap, around $30-40

What to know

  • Budget optics, not a lab microscope
  • LED lighting can glare on shiny coins
  • Small stand, needs a steady surface
  • Software is basic

Common questions

How much magnification for coins?

At least 50x, less won't show mint marks and die detail clearly.

Why not just a magnifying glass?

A USB scope puts it on your screen and takes photos, which is far more useful for grading and sharing.
