How vehicle recalls work
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle, or a piece of equipment in it, has a defect that creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet a federal safety standard. When that happens, the manufacturer must notify owners and fix the problem at no cost, whether by repairing, replacing, or in rare cases repurchasing the vehicle. The fix is free regardless of mileage for the vast majority of campaigns.

Contact any franchised dealer for your brand, give them your VIN, and schedule the free repair. If a part is on backorder, ask whether there is an interim safety measure. For a small number of serious defects, NHTSA and the manufacturer issue a do-not-drive or park-outside advisory, meaning the risk is high enough that you should stop driving or parking the car indoors until it is fixed.
