ALPS King Kong Camping Chair

9.0/10 Our verdictHands-on tested, not gifted

Big-and-tall done right. The wide seat, firm frame, and 800-pound stated capacity make this feel much more planted than a basic folding camp chair. Three years in, mine is still going strong. The tradeoff is simple: it is heavy and bulky.

Why it's the big-and-tall pick

For big-and-tall camping chairs, the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong feels solid. Its published capacity is 800 pounds, but the more useful everyday difference is how little the seat and frame shift when you sit down. Mine has stayed dependable through three years of use, which matters more to me than the number on the label.

Want a higher back? The Kijaro Dual Lock is also a good option if you want more back support, just know it's bulkier to carry.

Who should buy it

This chair makes the most sense for car camping, tailgates, backyard use, and anyone who prioritizes a roomy, stable seat over a small packed size. It is especially useful when narrow camp chairs pinch at the hips or feel unstable getting in and out.

Skip it for backpacking or any trip where you will carry the chair far from the car. The same steel and fabric that make it reassuring at camp also make it a poor choice when every pound and inch of packed space matters.

What held up after three years

The frame and seat on mine have remained usable without the sagging and creaking I have had from cheaper chairs. The chair is not delicate gear, but I still keep it dry before storage and avoid leaving it outside between trips. That basic care has helped the fabric and joints last.
