Start simple and build up
Telling time on an analog clock is a skill built in stages, and the Difficulty setting follows them. Begin with O'clock, where the minute hand always points to 12, so a child only reads the hour. Then move to the half hour, then the quarter hour (which connects to quarter-past and quarter-to language), then five-minute intervals once counting by fives is solid, and finally to the minute. Rushing to five-minute times before a child is fluent counting by fives is the usual stumbling block, so hold at each stage until it is easy.
Reading the two hands
The common confusion is which hand is which and that the hour hand moves between numbers. On these clocks the short, thick hand is the hour and the long hand is the minutes, and the hour hand is drawn in its true position (for example, at 3:30 it sits halfway between the 3 and the 4, not exactly on the 3). Pointing that out helps kids stop reading half-past times as the wrong hour. Choosing All 12 numbers makes reading easier for beginners; switch to only 12, 3, 6, 9 once they can fill in the rest themselves.
