Portable power buying guide

The best portable power station is the one sized to your loads

Calculate capacity and output first. Then compare verified models without paying for power you cannot use.

Research scope: specification-led buying guidance. We do not label untested products as hands-on winners.
Direct answer: Start with the devices you need to run. Add their wattage and runtime, allow for conversion loss, then choose a station whose continuous and surge output clear your highest loads. For most buyers, watt-hours answer runtime; watts answer whether an appliance can start and run.

QuestionWhat to calculateWhy it matters
How long must it run?Device watts × hours ÷ expected efficiencySets the minimum battery capacity.
Can it run the appliance?Running watts and startup surgeCapacity alone does not prove the inverter is strong enough.
How will it recharge?AC, car and solar input limitsInput power determines recovery time between uses.
Portable or installed?Intended use and applicable listingUL explains that a portable pack is not automatically a listed stationary home-storage system.

Choose for your use case

Light useUnder 500Wh class

Phones, lights, cameras and short laptop sessions.

Weekend use500–1,500Wh class

Fridge, CPAP and mixed campsite loads after calculation.

High demand1,500Wh+ class

Longer outages, RV loads or appliances with high startup demand.

A five-step buying check

  1. List every device, its running watts and required hours.
  2. Record startup or surge watts for motors and compressors.
  3. Use the calculator to set minimum capacity and output.
  4. Compare recharge time, port mix, weight, warranty and verified certification.
  5. Confirm the product is intended for the way you plan to connect and use it.

Quick answers

What size portable power station do I need?

Divide the watt-hours your devices need by expected system efficiency, then add a practical reserve. The inverter must also exceed both running and startup wattage.

Is a solar generator different from a portable power station?

Usually, a solar generator is a portable power station sold with or marketed for compatible solar panels. The battery station still determines storage and AC output.

Can a portable power station back up a house?

It can power connected devices. A stationary or panel-connected home system is a different use and may require listed equipment, transfer hardware, permits and professional installation.
