Portable and installed backup are different products
| Decision | Portable power station | Installed home battery |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Devices plug into the station | Connected through listed transfer or energy-storage equipment |
| Best fit | Short outages and essential devices | Automatic backup, larger loads or solar integration |
| Planning | Watt-hours and inverter output | Load study, usable kWh, surge, service and installation |
| Safety evidence | Portable-product listing for intended use | Complete system listing and installation requirements |
Choose for your use case
Fridge, modem, lights and charged devices.
Planned circuit coverage and transfer equipment.
Large HVAC and electric heat can change the system dramatically.
A five-step buying check
- Separate must-run devices from optional loads.
- Measure energy per outage day and maximum simultaneous power.
- Choose device-level or circuit-level backup.
- For installed systems, obtain a load study and installation quote.
- Verify complete-system certification and local permit requirements.

Quick answers
How big should a home backup battery be?
Size it from the watt-hours or kilowatt-hours used by the loads you intend to support, the desired outage duration and the system’s usable capacity—not total household consumption alone.
Can I plug a battery into a wall outlet to power my house?
Do not use an improvised cord or ordinary receptacle to backfeed a home. Home integration requires equipment intended and listed for that use.
Is a portable power station a home energy-storage system?
Not automatically. UL distinguishes portable power packs from stationary energy-storage systems and the standards used for those intended applications.
